High street food, clothing and furniture retailer Marks and Spencer has announced encouraging sales figures.

Since the re-launch of the company website earlier in the year, its online sales have increased by around 60 per cent.

The revamped version of the website marksandspencer.com was released in March following a collaboration between the companies' ecommerce team and that of the hugely success Amazon.

"We are pleased with the progress of Direct and continue to target £500m of sales from this business by 2010," said chief executive Stuart Rose.

Their overall revenue has also risen by 6.5 per cent to over four billion pounds in the first half of this year. It has also been revealed that the companies' pre tax profits have rose by eleven and a half percent to over four hundred and fifty two million pounds.

Stuart Rose also hinted at a new point of sales system will be implemented at every retail store in the near future, with the hope to improve the standard of service that customers receive.
